In the aftermath of the World Trade Center disaster, the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) needed to rapidly inspect every structure within the designated “Red Zone” to assess structural damage and ensure public safety. A wireless field application integrated with the NYCMap GIS database replaced the existing paper-based process with a real-time, automated inspection system. The result was a 40% increase in operational efficiency and a 90% reduction in the inspection cycle—enabling faster decision-making, improved data accuracy, and safer re-entry planning.
