CARSI, is a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility, and one of the best-equipped laboratories in the United States for geographical analysis. The CARSI laboratory comprises over $1 million in computer hardware and software, including 25 Windows workstations, one Linux workstation and one UNIX server, scanners, digitizing tablets, and various output devices. The system is optimized to host a plethora of GIS and Image processing application development tools, including the latest version of GE Smallworld 3.2, Oracle 10g, ArcGIS 9.x, Erdas Imagine, ENVI, and SPSS. In addition, CARSI houses and maintains NYCMap, the citywide base map for NYC. This map is derived from aerial photographs and consists of a single and unified coverage, 1 foot in resolution. Many data layers of attribute information accompany NYCMap including, all buildings citywide, street centerlines, railroads, subways, and emergency routes, a digital elevation model (DEM) or spot elevations, green spaces such as parks and cemeteries, bridges and tunnels, water features such as pears, and census 1990 and 2000 administrate districts and demographic data.
